At Lounsbury Landscaping we pull our soil straight from the field so it is very susceptible to the elements. When the field soil is accessible the price is $13.00/ton with a $75.00 minimum if you pick it up. This location is intended for dump truck loads. If you come in with a pick up we will load you out of our pile by the shop which is $28.30/ton with a $30 minimum. We do not screen, sift, or pulverize the soil so some minimal root structure from last years crop may be present. Our soil is classified as a Nordaway Loam. By "loam" we mean a soil that has a natural sand content - this makes the soil naturally loose and nice to work with.

For the occassion when top soil is needed while our field soil is inaccessible, we keep a supply of field soil covered in an accessible spot. For this reason we have dry soil virtually year round. The price of the tarped soil is $28.30/ton with a $30 minimum if you would like to pick it up yourself.

We figure one ton to be equivalent to one cubic yard - 27 cubic feet. As a general rule-of-thumb this would give you approximately 100 square feet of coverage at a 3" depth. If you take your square footage times your depth (on average and in feet not inches) and divide this by 27 it will give you a pretty good idea how many tons you may need in a loose state. If you are going to compact the soil you may need to increase your tonage anywhere from 30-40%.
